Origins and Meaning of Holi
Nearly two thousand years ago, a celebration was born in India to mark the end of winter and welcome the arrival of spring. What began as an agricultural festival gradually absorbed layers of religious and spiritual meaning, evolving into one of the most joyful and visually spectacular festivals in the world.
The festival unfolds in two distinct moments. Holika Dahan: on the eve of Holi, at the full moon, bonfires are lit across India to commemorate the legend of Holika — the demon king's sister who perished in the flames while the devout Prahlada emerged unharmed, a triumph of good over evil. Then Rangwali Holi: the following morning, millions of people shower each other with coloured powder and water in a joyful, uninhibited celebration of life, spring and the victory of light over darkness.
Why Are Colours Thrown During Holi?
The use of coloured powder during Holi is closely linked to the rise of Krishna worship, which gained widespread influence between the 6th and 15th centuries. According to a beloved legend, it was Yashoda, Krishna's mother, who suggested he colour the face of Radha — his beloved — because he envied her fair complexion. By smearing her with colour, the difference between them would disappear.
From that mythical moment onwards, coloured powder became a symbol of universal love and equality. To throw colour at someone is to offer them a little of that divine joy — a gesture that transcends language, age and background.

What Is Holi Powder?
Holi powder is one of the simplest products you'll ever use: cornstarch and food-grade dyes. That's essentially it. In ancient times, the colours were drawn entirely from nature — hibiscus for red, turmeric for yellow, neem for green, palash for orange, indigo for blue. Today, natural pigments have been replaced by synthetic dyes at concentrations typically below 1%, formulations that have been used safely for nearly 70 years across hundreds of millions of celebrations worldwide.

We add a small amount of sodium bicarbonate as an anti-caking agent — keeping the powder light, free-flowing and protected against moisture. No hidden ingredients. No compromise on quality. Does Holi Powder Stain?
Not if you use it correctly. The golden rule: always start dry. Shake out clothes, hair and shoes before any contact with water — this removes the vast majority of powder before it can set. On clothing, a standard 30°C machine wash with your usual detergent restores garments to their original colour. For very light or bleached hair, we recommend applying a hair oil or wearing a cap as a simple precaution.
